Today I opened a document in Microsoft Word (the sunday paper review that I was poised to create, barring the odd alteration to some sentence or two) so when trying to modify this document the screen went blank. I suppose the right thing to possess done when this occurs ended up being to go to edit>undo but I didn't.
I was frankly mystified; I'd already suffered a shock last week-end when my lap top suddenly refused to reply and I stood a rather depressing 24 hours of concern until a buddy here had diagnosed a problem with battery. Relief!
In these twenty four hours, it provided the opportunity reflect on the amount we have a tendency to depend on our little machines. Just over last year, my old PC caught the herpes virus and also the same task occurred, suddenly. I lost, not simply some precious writings but my emails, passwords and stuff I can't (or don't wish to) re-call.
It brought back the same memories: It was like having too difficult when a large part of my existence was removed and I had exactly the same situation last weekend, albeit for just a day approximately, zombie state.
I do often back-up things with an external H/D but I must admit I'm a little lax about this. Luckily in those days, a number of my old emails were stored over a greetings card web site so I was very grateful to the at the very least.
So time for this morning. I opened the document, composed of some 1000 words or thereabouts in addition to being soon as I attempted to atart exercising . words the screen went blank, immediately, no warning, no: "Are you sure you want to ditch this number of hours of your respective creativity?"
No - nothing, zilch.
Then I tried system restore, which I may not go anywhere near and still have it disabled (eventhough it seemed to get re-abled itself today on its own - curious?) Negative result anyway.
So, I searched and I searched, through the usual channels and I may find this 19.5 kb file easily but the identical result - blank page.
Now obviously it must be somewhere in my hard disk drive but where? I even checked the re-cycle bin in the event that, however, no.
I spent hours on the web, trawling from the Microsoft (soft in the head?) "support" which. as usual had me going round and round and rou....what?? Oh, yes!
Sorry about this, just nodded off, the thing is.
I even down-loaded a recovery programme and, naturally, re-cycled that right away.
Point is, I'm a bit nervous now about writing any articles, if they'd like to just disappear in smoke before my eyes. I always save, save, save as I'm writing but with this occasion, I'm writing direct onto Street Articles just as a precaution and can choose to save any future stuff as a draft; no less than that way, I know it's on the market somewhere.
I'd advise anyone else to accomplish the same.
Meanwhile, if any of you humans have any solution to this bizarre problem, maybe you could tell me, so I can avoid it in the future.
Many thanks.
