Recover Lost Data in 3 Steps
Recently, my six years old Maxtor boot drive became corrupted by the game and would not boot. Although I did have a backup from the drive, and I was able to salvage my data with Checkdisk, I decided this was a great time to purchase a more recent, bigger and harddrive and perform a fresh install of Windows and anything else. I found a Western Digital 500 GB PATA drive at Best Buy in Bel Air, Maryland for any price I could afford and replaced my old C:\ drive with all the new Western Digital.
I've installed a lot of computer drives over time but I've never replaced a boot drive in the system with multiple hard disk drives installed and Windows XP because the Operating System. I foolishly considered that Windows will be smart enough to detect that there was no C:\ drive inside the computer and format and partition the brand new drive as C:\. I found out later that if there are other drives installed, the Windows installer will assign the next logical drive letter to the brand new drive. In this case, my new boot drive became G:\ as an alternative to C:\. Although Windows XP worked fine on drive G:\, I wanted to avoid future issues with applications which may have issues with a boot drive with a nonstandard drive letter assignment.
It was my hope that Partition Commander 11 from Avanquest would assist me to change the offending drive letter to C:\ in addition to merge the two partitions about the old Maxtor drive to make one big partition without losing any with the newly recovered data.
Getting Started
The initial thing you will notice when you launch this program is really a reminder to create a Recovery CD that will provide you with all the tools you have to fix partitions and also the Master Boot Record (MBR), and also partition and format a whole new disk before installing your operating-system. You will also need this Recovery CD to bring back any system backup you create with Partition Commander. Each time you start this software, additionally, you will be prompted to execute a full backup of the computer. If you get tired in the reminders, you are able to turn them off within the General Settings underneath the Tools menu. Program icon buttons provide quick access to Simple Backup, Resize Partition, Clone Hard Disk, and Defragment Partition options.
You may also select to change towards the Quick View that can provide a simple set of options including one for Mac Related Operations. I did not see this option available inside the Advanced View program interface however, if you have a very Mac you'll be able to resize partitions and redistribute free space between Mac OS X and Windows os's.
Partition Commander will, automatically, open inside the Advanced View of what they call the Classic Layout that provides a clean user interface with well defined menu options, visual facts about each of the hard drives in or attached with your personal machine and an easy to get to Help section. Drop-down menus provide use of program functions and options in addition to helpful Wizards which will show you on the way.
The optional Professional Layout will give you more technical information about each hard disk in Hex format with drop-down menus for program functions and options. This information is made available by clicking around the Partition List Tab on the Disk View page.
The Personal Layout offers the same drive information and visuals because the Classic View but only has got the drop down menus at the top from the page for program functions and options.
Most men and women like the Classic Layout that's user friendly even for new users that have never performed any type of partitioning tasks before.
The left side with the Classic Layout screen is divided into:
Basic Partitioning Tasks:
Advanced Partitioning Tasks:
Backup Task:
Cloning Tasks:
Multi-System Management:
Help and Documentation:
With Partition Commander, I could easily Clone a Partition. Clone a Hard Disk, Create a Partition, Resize a Partition, Delete a Partition, execute a Simple Backup and change drive letter assignments for almost any hard disk drive except my boot drive, change volume labels and defragment my drives. This is merely a fraction from the features obtainable in Partition Commander 11.

Additional Partition Commander 11 Features:
I wasn't really surprised that Partition Commander couldn't change my boot drive from G:\ to C:\ because none in the other programs I tried could get it done either. I was disappointed that there wasn't a less arduous solution than to disconnect my other hard drives and reinstall Windows therefore it would correctly set the drive up as C:\. Under the Multi-System Management Menu may be the Install OS Wizard but it can be a drop down menu which I didn't take a look at until I had solved the problem with only 1 drive attached when I installed Windows. It might have helped had I found it sooner but in any event, I still had to reinstall Windows. At least my drive has become mainly because it should be.
I was content to begin to see the Help files available within the program but I could have liked to see a PDF User's Manual that may be downloaded and printed for easier reference.
Restoring backups completed with Partition Commander requires booting with all the Recovery CD making sense if the backup is of the boot drive but there needs to be some way of restoring a backup to a different drive from inside the program and never have to re-boot it through the Recovery CD.
My biggest disappointment was that Partition Commander can't merge both the partitions about the old Maxtor drive. I contacted Technical Support and explained that there were only two partitions about the drive understanding that they were both NTFS but this program wouldn't normally merge both. The only thing they can suggest was that the drive was connected by USB knowning that was the challenge. I surely could use this program to backup the info to a different drive and delete the existing partitions then create one large partitions and format it NTFS. Again, I got where I needed to visit but there needs to have been a less arduous way to get there. I think about the failure to merge both partitions becoming a major problem within the program. Everyone has USB drives for storage and backups now so there mustn't be any issue caused due to the fact a drive is connected by USB. The Partition Commander product page does state that it truely does work with USB drives. Apparently it really didn't like "my" USB drive for reasons unknown.
There remains a great deal to like about Partition Commander 11. It's easy to use and will simplify many with the tasks forced to create, partition, and format a new drive as well as protect data in your existing computer drives. There are lots of different programs which will help you partition and format your hard drives. I think I've probably used many of them sometime and other but Partition Commander 11 can get the job done easier and faster.
Technical Support was attentive to my obtain help, even though they couldn't produce a much better answer as to why my partitions wouldn't normally merge. My 4-Star Rating is because with the program's failure to merge both partitions in my USB drive. Perhaps other users won't go through the same issue.
